Hobie Stand Up Paddleboard teams win Ocean Ohana Catalina Challenge

In what some would call less that optimal race conditions, south wind and 2-3 ft west wind swell, the Hobie Stand Up Paddle team of Chuck Patterson and Byron Kurt not only beat the record for the 38 mile crossing, they crushed it. Paddling a custom Hobie 18' carbon race board shaped by Gary Larson and Hobie Alter Jr., Chuck and Byron completed the crossing in 6 hours 32 minutes beating the existing record of 6 hours 51 minutes set last year by Kyle Mochizuki and Jim Turrell.
Not to be overshadowed by the guys, the Hobie women's team of Bridget Saeman and Jodie Nelson, paddling the new Hobie X-14 race board, finished the crossing in 8 hours 52 minutes setting the bar for future women's teams.
