As part of the historic return of America’s Cup racing to New York City, a team of Hobie sailors jetted from Oceanside, California to assemble a fleet of Wave catamarans. The Hobie boats were destined to sail the Hudson under the command of youth skippers as part of the AC Endeavour community outreach program.

An unusual sight: The Waves were hoisted onto the Hudson River by the same gigantic crane used to launch the multi-million dollar AC-45 foiling cats that raced in the main event.

You couldn’t ask for a more dramatic backdrop for young sailors than the Manhattan skyline.

Quick company: The kids were thrilled with the speed of the Hobie Waves, fast, smaller versions of the AC-45 catamarans. “They’re so fast,” they’d say.

The young sailors donned foul weather gear and waited out a series of rain squalls. The conditions failed to dim their enthusiasm. They were thrilled to sail catamarans on the America’s Cup course.

The sleek AC45s of the America’s Cup World Series moved on to Chicago at the end of the weekend. The Hobie Waves will stay in New York, to benefit Hudson River Community Sailing and Rocking the Boat.
